With unpretentious formal rigor and a lighthearted deadpan, the film tracks Xiaobin’s development through self-reflexive escalation.

Xiaobin is 18 years-old, and recently immigrated from China to Argentina, hoping to start a new life. Her poor Spanish causes her to be fired from her first job, but at another job, she meets an Indian immigrant named Vijay, and goes out with him. Her outlook on life changes as she learns the different tenses in the Spanish language.

Slant Magazine by Clayton Dillard
The Future Perfect has the texture of a novella that keeps reworking the same idea in successively intricate ways.
The New York Times by Glenn Kenny
There is gentle comedy here, and a real rooting interest deriving from Ms. Zhang’s committed, never-a-false-note performance. The film’s unusual perspective makes it a distinctive and potentially enriching experience.
Wohlatz’s sensitivity to language, the way it’s used and how the ability to express oneself literally changes the manner in which we deal with the world around us, is subtly yet rigorously demonstrated, not just with the words and tenses themselves but how they’re spoken.
The Hollywood Reporter by Neil Young
It takes skill to successfully handle heavy issues with a light touch, but that's what German-born, Argentina-based writer-director Nele Wohlatz pulls off with her delightfully original documentary/fiction hybrid.
