In order to complete their graduation from witchcraft school, young witches must claim their dominion; the sole object or idea they must base their magic around and channel their powers through. But in the ten thousand years witches have reigned, all the good dominions (like fire or lightening) have been taken, and all that's left are loose abstract concepts or grammatical articles like "the" or "and".
