Mischievously self-assured fourteen-year-old Mára and eccentric Heduš set out by car into the frozen wastes of the Czech Republic in search of adventure. A road movie about the elusive bond of boyhood friendship and the irrepressible desire to experience something, even if you don't exactly know what.
Observant and wise about boys in puberty yet impish and carefree when necessary and never idealizing the cold and dreary countryside they travel through, Winter Flies is a lovely little film that’s as comfortable as an old sweater and almost as warm.
While Winter Flies might not tell us anything new, it relates its old story with a vivid specificity and a beguiling sense of mischief that makes it feel fresh.
If only every comedy had the surprise twist that the Czech road picture Winter Flies saves for its finale. It’s simple, and simple-minded, and it so upends expectations that it leaves you the way every comedy should — tickled.
