In this epic melodrama, a poverty-stricken village woman raises her sons through many trials and tribulations. In the absence of her husband and against the best efforts of a cunning moneylender, she rises above her circumstances to be there for both her children and for herself.

The New York Times by Dave Kehr
The film is at once a sort of Indian "Stella Dallas," which finds the heroine making sacrifice after sacrifice on behalf of her family, and a "Gone With the Wind"-style epic of social change.
The performances are broad; the comedy is mainly slapstick. The politics are nationalist and vaguely left-wing.
More of a curio than a classic and it takes the strongest of constitutions to endure this film without entertaining notions of matricide
