In 1958, when the head of a large corporation suddenly dies by suicide, a controlling board member attempts to buy a controlling share of the company by temporarily depressing the stock price by hiring an obviously incompetent president. Norville Barnes, a naive business graduate working in the mailroom, is hired as the new sham president, but he is much more than he appears.
