Yūta Togashi spent his middle school years suffering from "chūnibyō" -- an affliction where one is so desperate to be special that they convinced themselves they have hidden superpowers. Trying to be free of his embarrassing past, Yūta attempts to start high school in a new school, but is immediately singled out by a chūnibyō sufferer named Rikka Takanashi.
