When officer Daniel Carter happens upon a blood-soaked figure limping down a deserted stretch of road, he rushes the man to a nearby hospital, only to discover that patients and personnel are transforming into something inhuman. For fans of horror maestros John Carpenter and Stuart Gordon, nothing fills a void like good, old eighties-fashioned gore. Which is what we get from the writer-director team of Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski, unabashed fans of Reagan-era blood, slash and goo.
A little too derivative to truly stand out, but gorehounds will love it. Don’t a void.
At least its failings aren’t formulaic ones — or perhaps they’re the fault of jamming in more fantastic-cinema formula than one modestly scaled film can support.
Blending The Thing, Prince of Darkness, Hellraiser and Lovecraftian cosmic horror, this falls flat in suspense and characterisation, but ace ’80s FX – all liquefying latex – will delight genre fans.
