As befits a filmmaker who defined as well as challenged the definition of Italian neorealism, Voyage to Italy unfolds as a thorny narrative and a profoundly personal documentary.

Roberto Rossellini introduces Katherine and Alexander Joyce, a bored English couple travelling to Italy to sell a house inherited from an uncle. Their separate amusements in Naples expose the cracks in their marriage. As they become increasingly cruel and cynical towards each other, the Joyces must decide if they can salvage their relationship.

The New York Times by A.O. Scott
In its time, this film represented the arrival of something new, and even now it can feel like a bulletin from the future.
Voyage to Italy is the kind of movie that makes those unhappily in love feel understood. And even if that’s not you (congratulations), it’s still possible to groove on Rossellini’s stranger-in-a-strange-land psychodrama.
Village Voice by Michael Atkinson
Voyage to Italy is close to watching actual strangers suffer loneliness despite being together. It can leave an aching bruise, but only if you're paying attention.
