Following Guenther's suicide, his friend Paul recounts the events that led up to it. Both students struggling with unrequited love, Guenther and Paul formed a suicide pact. During a weekend of partying at Guenther's lakeside home, Guenther realizes that Paul, who is in love with, is really in love with Guenther's sister Hilde.

A tragic but beautiful film, Daniel Brühl and August Diehl give wonderful performances. Some costumes are period inaccurate, but the film is otherwise a fascinating look at the Weimar era.
