Chu leaves Beijing to be with his son Alex, his American daughter-in-law Martha, and his young grandson in New York City. Chu does not speak English, and Martha does not know Mandarin, so Alex reluctantly becomes the family's interpreter. Chu's lonely life in America changes when he meets Mrs. Chen, a fellow Beijing native.
