Hla and Nyo Nyo live in a country torn by conflict. Hla is a Buddhist and the owner of a medical clinic in Myanmar, where the Rohingya (a Muslim minority community) are persecuted. Nyo Nyo is a Muslim and an apprentice midwife at the clinic. Together they are determined to provide healthcare for their community.

The situation in Myanmar remains tense and ethnic cleansing continues, yet Snow Hnin finds grace notes of optimism to offset the bitterness of the film’s backdrop. It makes Midwives a thoughtful, empathetic and powerful insight into the region – and its women.
