The commander of a failed 1928 Arctic airship expedition remembers the events of the "Italia" airship flight, crash, and subsequent rescue efforts. These memories are interspersed with action from the event, while the "ghosts" of people involved appear in his memories to assist him in determining his guilt in the affair.

Gripping adventure tale.

Village Voice

The Red Tent manages not to collapse and is on the whole a likable movie. It reminded me of the typical '50s epics - lavishly produced, lushly scored, requiring relatively little thought, and perfect for two hours escape. [26 Aug 1971, p.55]

Variety

Some spectacularly beautiful Arctic footage, plus an exciting personal story of survival, make the production compelling and suspenseful.

The New York Times

Despite the false bid for suspense in its framing device and its several ritual claims to excitement, it finally lacks even the interest of its own events. For this, I think the director is very much at fault.
