In the late 19th century, Swedish emigrants come to the Danish island of Bornholm. Lasse and his son Pelle find employment at a large farm, but are treated as the lowest form of life. Pelle learns Danish but is still called a foreigner. Yet, neither of them wants to give up their dream of finding a better life.

This epic film provides a window into the world of 19th century Scandinavia and its social hierarchy. There are very few moments of emotional/comedic relief and the film is slowly paced, but for those interested in the time period, the characters are compelling and the world is fascinating.
