8-year-old Shambala's mother has died, and his father is away working, so he lives with his aunt, uncle and grandparents in the remote Tengri Mountains of Kyrgyzstan. There, he explores the rivers, lakes, mountains, and hills, and must deal with his uncles disrespect and cruelty towards the environment and his family.
