Devdas returns home after ten years, having completed his studies. However, his desire to marry his childhood friend Paro is foiled by his father due to her lower social status. Devastated by this, Devdas spirals and descends into alcoholism, frequently attending the brothel of the courtesan Chandramukhi, who, in turn, loves Devdas.
