Henry Hobson tyrannically runs a boot maker’s shop, for which he he exploits his three daughters as cheap labour. A stingy widower, he declares that there will be ‘no marriages’ to avoid the expense of marriage settlements. Upon hearing this news, his eldest daughter, Maggie, promptly rebels.
