Based on the novel "The thieving magpie" by A.I. Gertsen. Two famous actors, Stepan and Ugrumov, decide to search for a better life in the provincial theater of Prince Skalińskiego. The prince welcomes them with open arms. Stepan soon develops an interest in actress Aneta, who is the mistress of the prince, with tragic consequences.
