Between 1975 and 1980, Peter Sutcliffe, also known as the Yorkshire Ripper, murdered or attempted to murder at least 20 women. Even though he was discovered to be the perpetrator, the South Yorkshire police's manhunt lasted five years and involved more than a thousand police officers, marking it as one of the biggest criminal investigations ever.
