This dazzling animated film follows a flower merchant in Mumbai. A would-be child bride who escaped, she spends her days selling flowers on the street and dancing at a local bar. One day she notices another flower merchant across the street, a refugee from Kashmir, and the two gradually fall in love.

Indeed, there’s such an abundance of labored-over beauty in Bombay Rose that it feels almost churlish to say its storytelling is less enrapturing: Rao, who animated, edited and wrote the film on her own, seems to be least assured on the last of those tasks.

If you’re looking for an animated dip into Indian culture and a film that charts its own path to a distinct animated style, it’s well worth a look.
Painstakingly hand-painted frame by frame, the film is visually dazzling, veering between styles and time periods to create a living, breathing continuum of Indian art. It’s mesmerizing — but given its haphazard narrative, the film’s delights begin and end at its aesthetics.
The disparate ingredients do not always gel. But in fits and starts Bombay Rose casts quite a spell.
