In 12th century Arab-ruled Andalusia, famed philosopher Averroes (or Ibn Rushd) is appointed grand judge by the caliph. However, his liberal court judgements do not please everyone. The caliph's political rivals, centered around the leader of a fanatical Islamic sect, attempt to remove Averroes from power and reduce his intellectual influence.
