Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam

“Tawacore” combines the words hardcore and taqwa, which means "god-fearing" in Arabic. After writer Michael Muhammad Knight coined the term in his novel about a group of young Islamic punk rockers, many young American Muslims were inspired to form their own Muslim punk bands and explore the rebellion and subversion of the genre.
