Vadim's direction is pretty tedious, and his main aim seems to be titillation.

In this science-fiction cult classic based on the French comics of the same name, Barbarella, a space adventurer living in the far future, is tasked by Earth's government to hunt down a scientist who has invented a dangerous weapon. Barbarella journeys to a distant planetary system, encountering new enemies as well as sexual adventures.

San Francisco Chronicle by Edward Guthmann
Barbarella is a pure goof -- Vadim called it a kind of sexual Alice in Wonderland of the future -- and Fonda seems to have reveled in every sexy, campy moment.
It’s at once smirky and tedious, and a missed opportunity to boot.
Cheerful, kitsch and camp.
Austin Chronicle by Marjorie Baumgarten
It makes virtually no sense, but the costumes are fetishistic gems and the set design trips the light fantastic. A camp classic.
