David Carr is a British worker and Communist who, in 1936, travels to Spain to fight for the Republicans during the country's civil war. Together with liberals, anarchists and fellow Communists, Carr and his comrades attempt to resist fascism and the Franco regime. Meanwhile, Josef Stalin consolidates power in the Soviet Union, threatening Carr's idealistic crusade.
