12-year-old Sam heads off to camp with his fellow cub scouts, and soon stumbles upon the home of a masked, feral-looking child. Though Sam is convinced that a terrible fate awaits them all, the scoutmasters ignore him – after all, Sam is known for telling tall tales.

This unquestionably good-looking film, shot by world-class cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis (The Drop, Bullhead), plays like a Low Countries-variation on the classy Spanish-language work of Guillermo Del Toro, at least in terms of style if not substance, with what little narrative there is more of a clothesline for small-scale set pieces rather than a conduit for character insight.
Jonas Govaerts’ first feature is a pastiche of familiar horror elements that’s well crafted throughout, but falls prey to the common dilemma of finding a payoff worthy of the buildup.
Impressively nightmarish.
